Where Safety Valve Orders Get Stuck
- Finding an authorized source instead of a reseller. Relief devices bought outside the manufacturer's channel can arrive with warranty gaps and certification paperwork the factory will not stand behind. Manufacturer agreements also set where each line can be sold, so authorization is a territory question as much as a brand question. One call settles both.
- Lead time surfacing too late. Long-lead materials and certification packages can push delivery past your outage window. Settling the spec early keeps the schedule intact, and we will give you the honest lead time at the quoting stage rather than after the PO clears.
- Relief devices coming due with no slack in the schedule. Test and recertification dates rarely line up neatly with production. We can supply new units, service the ones you have, or run both in parallel so the plant keeps moving.
- The spec came from whatever was installed last. Replacement in kind works fine until the process changes. New fluid, higher temperature, or a different back pressure condition, and that old part number no longer matches the service. Oversized orifices are the most common result: the valve dumps too much too fast, slams shut, and grinds down its own seating surfaces.
- The documentation does not match the device. Set pressure, capacity certification, and nameplate data all have to line up when the inspector shows up.

Kunkle Safety Valves
Leser
German-built spring-loaded safety valves, including the Type 526 flanged line built to API 526 for refinery and petrochemical service. The Leser range extends to clean service designs for sanitary applications, critical service for corrosive media, changeover valves that let you service one valve while the standby holds protection, and bursting discs. A strong fit when your spec calls for API 526 interchangeability or high-alloy bodies such as Duplex, Monel, or Hastelloy.
Continental Disc | Groth Corporation
Rupture discs and holders for service where seat leakage is unacceptable, along with Groth pressure and vacuum relief valves, emergency relief vents, and flame arrestors for atmospheric and low-pressure storage tanks. Rupture discs also pair under an SRV to isolate the valve from corrosive or polymerizing media.

What to Check When You Specify a Relief Device
- The governing relieving scenario. Fire case, blocked outlet, thermal expansion, control failure, or utility loss. Whichever demands the most capacity sets the device.
- Required relieving capacity at the conditions that scenario creates, in the units your code uses.
- Set pressure against MAWP, plus the accumulation and overpressure allowance your code permits.
- Back pressure, superimposed and built-up. This one answer decides conventional versus balanced bellows versus pilot-operated.
- Inlet pressure drop. API 520 holds non-recoverable inlet loss to 3% of set pressure on conventional valves. Measure the piping run you have rather than assuming it passes.
- Discharge routing and reaction forces. Atmosphere, flare, or closed header each change the calculation.
- Materials for body, trim, and soft goods, matched to fluid, temperature, and corrosion conditions.
- Code and stamp required. ASME Section I or Section VIII, National Board capacity certification, and any registration your jurisdiction requires.
- Installation access. Whether the device can be tested in place or has to come off the unit for service.
- Lead time against your outage window, and whether a spare or changeover arrangement keeps you covered during service.

Repair on a certified valve usually runs a fraction of what a new one costs. TRIVACO holds National Board VR Certificates across our regional shops to inspect, restore, and reset your existing safety valves within ASME tolerances, and return them fully documented.

Do you stock safety valves, or is everything built to order?
We carry local Kunkle inventory through TSV Service & Sales in Indianapolis, where we are the Factory Authorized Assembler for Indiana and western Kentucky. Other lines and non-standard configurations are quoted with a real lead time at the time of order.
What is the difference between a safety valve and a relief valve?
A safety valve pops open fully and fast, which is what compressible service like steam and gas requires. A relief valve opens in proportion to how far over setpoint the system is, which suits liquid service. A safety relief valve is built to work either way depending on how it is applied.
How often do safety valves need to be tested?
It depends on jurisdiction, service, and the governing code. Many plants run annual testing on steam service and stretch to three or five years on clean process service, with test history driving the interval. Your jurisdiction and your inspector set the requirement.
Can you turn a valve around inside our shutdown window?
Usually, if we know the dates. Send us the tag list and the window and we will tell you what fits and what needs a replacement unit ordered instead. For valves that cannot come off the unit, our mobile VR trailer runs the same certified process on your site.
When does it make sense to replace a safety valve rather than repair it?
Replace when the body or nozzle is damaged past machining limits, when the model is obsolete and parts are gone, or when a process change puts the valve outside its design conditions. In most other cases, a certified VR repair costs a fraction of a new unit.
Do I need a rupture disc and a safety valve, or just one?
A rupture disc alone works where you can accept the system venting until someone replaces the disc. Pairing a disc under an SRV protects the valve from corrosive, sticky, or polymerizing media and eliminates seat leakage, and the valve reseats after the event. Corrosive service and tight fugitive emissions limits are the two conditions that usually point to the pairing.
What documentation comes with a new safety valve from TRIVACO?
Nameplate data with set pressure, capacity certification, and material test reports when your order specifies them. If you also use us for repair, all of it can live in ValvKeep® under your tag number.
