Problem: A pipe or tube has broken, and you have no time to weld, what do you do?

A steel plant customer had a recent break in 1” elbow containing grease to lubricate a rolling mill. As this is a critical part of the process, downtime must be kept to a minimum. Since the break occurred during a scheduled roll change, maintenance had a window of 15 to 20 minutes to correct the problem. Welding a new elbow was out of the question, as it would take at least one hour, not to mention the time needed to get a hot work permit and fire watch person assigned.

Solution: Install a Lokring seal to fix the pipe or tube, requiring no welding

The solution came in using the Lokring technology of a permanent metal-to-metal seal eliminating welding, hot work permit and fire watch. The customer found that cutting just behind the welds on the burst socket weld 90, he would have a perfect fit. From start of cutting out the 90 to installing the new Lokring elbow, completion took less than 10 minutes. Operations called asking how much longer would be needed to complete the repair, they were very surprised to hear that the system was ready for operation.
